One Platform. Two Visions. Infinite Possibilities.

When developing a new eMTB, the conversation often starts with specifications: motor power, battery capacity, suspension travel or component choices. While these elements are important, they rarely answer a more fundamental question:

What riding experience are we trying to create?

That question became the starting point for a project built around the MAHLE M40 platform. Instead of designing a bike to fit a predefined market category or a specific specification target, the goal was to explore how a single technological foundation could deliver completely different riding experiences.

The result was two concepts with distinct personalities, built around the same frame and the same MAHLE M40 System:

HOT LAP, focused on agility, responsiveness and a natural riding feel.
WEEKEND ESCAPE, designed for adventure, versatility and long-distance exploration.

Two bikes. One platform. Two very different ways of experiencing the trail.

Flexibility at the Core

Every eMTB begins long before tyres, wheels or suspension are selected. The drive system plays a major role in shaping how a bike feels on the trail.

That is why the versatility of the MAHLE M40 platform was such an important part of this project. Beyond delivering a balanced combination of power, range and weight, the System allows its behaviour to be adapted to different riding objectives through advanced motor tuning and assistance settings.

Rather than acting as a fixed element, the drive system becomes a tool for designing riding experiences.

The same platform can be configured for a more dynamic and direct power delivery or for a smoother, more natural riding character, allowing brands to create bikes with clearly differentiated identities while relying on the same technological foundation.

HOT LAP: Lightweight Performance for Maximum Fun

The objective behind HOT LAP was simple: create an eMTB that feels as close as possible to a conventional mountain bike while retaining the advantages of electric assistance.

The philosophy was not simply about reducing weight. Every decision was made with the intention of improving agility, responsiveness and the connection between rider and trail.

Built around the lighter configuration of the M40 platform, the concept prioritises quick handling, efficiency and precise control on demanding terrain.

The result is a bike designed to deliver an intuitive riding experience, encouraging riders to push harder through corners, change direction faster and fully engage with the trail ahead.

WEEKEND ESCAPE: Built to Go Further

If HOT LAP is focused on agility, WEEKEND ESCAPE starts with a different question:

What bike would you choose if you left tomorrow without knowing when you would return?

This concept was created for riders who combine daily mobility, trail riding, weekend escapes and multi-day adventures.

Here, the objective is not to save every possible gram, but to expand what the bike can do. Greater energy capacity, luggage solutions and durable component choices transform the bike into a versatile platform ready for a wide variety of riding scenarios.

WEEKEND ESCAPE demonstrates how the same M40 platform can evolve into a bike focused on exploration, comfort and self-supported adventures while maintaining its trail capabilities.

One Platform, Endless Possibilities

The most interesting aspect of this project is not how different the two builds are, but the fact that both originate from the same technological foundation.

The MAHLE M40 platform demonstrates how a single eMTB System can support very different visions of riding. From a lightweight and agile trail machine to a bike designed for long-distance exploration, the final character of the bike is ultimately defined by the experience its creators want to deliver.

Because in the end, a bike is more than a collection of specifications.

It is defined by the places it takes you, the emotions it creates and the stories it helps you build along the way.

Coming Next: The Power of Motor Mapping

omponents are only part of the equation.

In the next chapter, we will take a closer look at one of the most powerful features of the MAHLE M40 platform: customised motor mapping. We will explore how software can influence a bike’s behaviour and how tuning the System can play just as important a role as hardware in shaping the riding experience.
