M40 System awarded at the Design & Innovation Award
MAHLE SmartBike Systems has earned a new Design & Innovation Award with the M40 System, our first full‑power mid‑drive designed for eMTB. The jury highlighted the balance of performance, low system weight and clean integration, alongside advanced control features that enhance precision and a natural ride feel across varied terrain. According to the jury note, the System can even adjust assistance based on heart‑rate data, an intelligent approach to comfort and training efficiency (as provided in the jury’s citation).
What stands out about the M40 System
Power-to-weight in a compact package
The M40 delivers up to 105 Nm and 850 W peak in a 2.5 kg drive unit, with a 48 V architecture for efficiency and sustained output. With the iM5 534 Wh battery (2.5 kg), total drive + battery weight is around 5 kg.
Sensors and control for precise assistance
A high‑resolution speed sensor works with torque and cadence inputs to regulate output quickly and smoothly, supporting controlled traction and a natural pedalling feel on technical climbs and changing surfaces. Features include Auto-hold to prevent roll‑back on steep pitches and Dynamic Overrun to keep momentum as you crest obstacles.
Battery options for different builds
Two integrated batteries share form factor and connectors: iM5 (534 Wh, 2.5 kg) to prioritise weight, and iM8 (800 Wh) for extended range. This lets brands tailor each bike’s proposition without redesigning the platform.
