X20 System updating process

At MAHLE SmartBike Systems we continually update all our products throughout their lifespan, optimising their performance with constant updates to their firmware. This is without a doubt the best way to fully enjoy your SmartBike, with new features in every update and solutions to any potential issues.

Latest X20 System Firmware Improvements

The new firmware update for X20 Systems introduces several new features and enhancements, including:

  • Range Extender compatibility
  • Walk Assistance Mode
  • Ambient Light Sensor (note: eBikes should be taken to a dealer for sensor configuration)
  • Customizable motor maps through the mobile End User app
  • Improved autonomy accuracy displayed in Pulsar ONE
  • Power and Cadence data via ANT+
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements

You can update the system by using the micro-USB port for the smart charger (the update will also be possible via the app in the near future). To perform an update, you need to connect the charger to your computer and transfer the update files to the charger.

Disconnect the charger of the Power outlet. No LED will be operating.

Connect the charger to your computer using micro-USB port. LED of the charger and the HMI will turn to a PURE BLUE light.
Copy the unzipped update files (update_MUT.bin) to the new Drive Unit (MAHLE_UTOOL) which will appear on your computer and safety remove the new drive on your computer.

Disconnect the charger of your computer. (No LED will be operating)

Note: If an error occurred during the uploading process, the LED of the charger will turn to a steady RED light for 10 seconds. After that, the charger goes back to normal operation.

Connect the charger of the Power outlet.

LED of the charger will display a steady WHITE light.

Connect the Charger to the eBike as you would connect it for a normal charging process. The LED of the charger will constantly flash in PURPLE while the update is being performed.

Update Completed. Once the update process is finished
the LED of the charger will turn to a steady GREEN light for 10 seconds. After that, the charger goes back to normal operation.

Note: If an error occurred during the updating process, the LED of the charger will turn to a steady RED light for 10 seconds. After that, the charger goes back to normal operation.

01. Disconnect the charger from the power outlet. There should be no LEDs lit up.
02. Connect the charger to your computer using the micro-USB port. The charger LED and the HMI will turn BLUE.
Copy the extracted update files (update_MUT.bin) to the new Drive Unit (MAHLE_UTOOL), which will appear on your computer, and safely eject the new drive on your computer.
03. Disconnect the charger from your computer. (No LED should be lit up)
Note: If an error occurred during the uploading process, the charger LED will turn a steady RED for 10 seconds. After that, the charger will return to normal operation.
04. Connect the charger to the power outlet.
The charger LED will display a steady WHITE light.
05. Connect the charger to the eBike as you would connect it for a normal charging process. The charger LED will flash continuously in PURPLE while the update is being performed.

Do not disconnect the charger while the PURPLE light is on.
06. Update Completed. Once the update process is finished the charger LED will turn a steady GREEN for 10 seconds. After that, the charger will return to normal operation.

X35 System updating process​

MAHLE X35 Systems require a special device called MAHLE GCU to be updated correctly, so we recommend that you contact your authorised dealer to carry out this update process properly. Latest firmware version available: V Q4.3 Released October 2023 which replace V Q3.2 released September 2022 and all the previous versions.

How to update your X35 bike

01. Download the file, unzip the downloaded ZIP file. Next, copy the unzipped files to the root of the USB stick.
02. Connect the USB stick to a GCU (the GCU must be turned off, disconnected from the charger and the bike).
03. Turn off the bike if you have not already done so. Next switch on the bike.
04. Plug in the charger.
05. Connect the GCU with USB stick to the charger and wait 10 seconds until the GCU´s light stops flashing.
06. Connect the other end of the GCU to the bike’s charging port.
07. Wait until updates are completed by monitoring the GCU status light:
  1. Steady or intermittent yellow: Updating, please wait
  2. Intermittent purple: Auto-updating, please wait
  3. Steady green: Successfully completed
  4. Steady red*: Update failed entirely
  5. Alternating green and red*: One task has failed and one has been successful
  6. Steady white: Update package has been ignored
08. Unplug the charger from mains power, 9. Turn off the bike. remove the GCU from the bike and disconnect the USB stick.
09. Turn off the bike.

*In cases D and E, you will need to disconnect in order to repeat the process. Disconnect the GCU from the bike and the charger, turn off the bike and repeat steps 4-9. If the update process is still unsuccessful, send the GCU_log.txt file located on the USB memory stick by email to MAHLE Smartbike Systems to analyse the problem.
