MAHLE’s new M40 System shines in northern Spain during a demanding EMBN test

That’s why we’re excited to share the latest episode from the Electric Mountain Bike Network (EMBN), where our new M40 mid-drive motor is put to the test in one of the most rugged and breathtaking environments in southern Europe: the mountains of Palencia, in northern Spain.
From the very beginning of the video, Steve Jones, EMBN host and a well-known figure in the eMTB world, highlights the lightweight and compact size of the M40, noting how surprising it is that a motor so small can deliver such high power and control. Weighing in at only 2.5 kg, the M40 stands as the lightest full-power system on the market, part of our mission to redefine performance in electric mountain bikes.
The route was anything but easy: loose rocks, technical climbs, sharp turns, and brutal gradients challenged both rider and machine. But as shown in the video, the M40 responds with pinpoint accuracy, delivering power naturally and in perfect sync with the rider, even at low cadence.
Steve also emphasizes how the system delivers predictable and controlled assistance, a key design goal achieved through our advanced sensor technology. Our ultra-sensitive speed sensor, capable of detecting motion within just 3 cm, ensures immediate yet smooth power delivery, tailored to every terrain demand.
The setup, which includes 534 Wh or 800 Wh battery options, the Head Unit HMI display, and the new Trio Remote, allowed the EMBN team to tackle a challenging ride with high elevation gain, sudden terrain shifts, and variable conditions without overheating or losing efficiency. All while keeping the e-bike agile, responsive, and fun to ride.
